You will be assigned TWO peer essays to review. Do these reviews on Canvas before 11:59 pm on Wednesday, May 20.

Film, online discussion
If you missed class for a school-excused absence, you will receive an "X" on your grade which does not affect your grade either way. If you want points instead, you may do the make-up work.
MAKE-UP WORK: Watch the first hour of Slavery by Another Name and write an ongoing "interaction" with it as you watch. Instead of notes that copy what you see and hear, comment on what you're thinking, feeling, and wondering as you watch.
Act 1, scene one (pp. 1-28)
Read, do the "four square" assignment
For the assignment, just jot down some notes/observations in each category. You will not have a lot to write about yet, but aim for something in each box.
HELPFUL HINTS: * The stars on the family tree=family members involved in the trade for the piano. * It's easiest to start at the bottom of the family tree. The play is set in 1937. If the person at the bottom of the tree was born in 1925, the person is 12 years old. Then go up to his/her parents, her mother's brother, their parents, etc. * One person on the family tree is not mentioned in the story. Use the process of elimination to place her. * The heavy line on the timeline=CURRENT events (what happened to get Boy Willie to come to Pittsburgh?) * Do a rough draft of the timeline first or it will probably be a mess. If you do have to squeeze one or two missed things in the timeline that's okay though.

On the left side of a piece of paper, write down revealing moments (quotes, with page numbers, documented in one-source MLA style). b. On the right side of the paper, record your thoughts, insights, and observations that explain HOW and WHY the quote on the left is revealing (worth a second read). 2. You may work alone or with a partner 3. Cover the whole chapter and show that you thought deeply. There is no minimum number of quotes. Instead, work until you feel satisfied that you have met those two requirements.

Also, if you have decided that you will opt out of the film, please let me know that you will need the alternate assignment ASAP so I will be prepared for you.
Chapter 5 Group Work
We worked together in groups to create a rough draft of an essay which explores the moment in chapter five when Daisy sobs, "It makes me sad because I've never seen such-- such beautiful shirts before" (98).
If you missed class, you will write the essay on your own. To be prepared for next class, write three paragraphs.
1. Why does Daisy cry upon seeing Gatsby's shirts?
2. Does Gatsby understand her reaction fully? What would he think?
3. How do their reactions reveal important elements of their relationship as you see it develop throughout the novel?
You can read the book online (see the side menu for the link and note that the page that pops up tells you your password and username!)

You may work alone or with a group of up to FOUR people maximum. If you are going on choir tour, you must work only with others who are going on tour (and vice versa). See the handouts for a general idea of what is going on. Then see a classmate and/or Ms. Bishop for further details.

2. Complete a self-evaluation using the rubric I gave you.
3. Complete an evaluation of the peer assigned to you using the rubric I gave you (your peer will see this and your name will be on it--be honest, respectful, and constructive).
If you lose your rubrics (or are sick or singing to veterans or something), here they are:
Where do you watch the videos? Well that is complicated. They are too big to load to this site or to Canvas (they both have 50 MB file limits and that would mean dividing the videos into about 30 second snippets--annoying!).
I have posted them on YouTube temporarily. Follow the links to see all four videos from our class.
ANOTHER NOTE: I will delete these posts on Tuesday, November 18. Do not delay! (It's due by Monday anyway . . . )
To keep your class relatively private, I shared the links for your class on Canvas. The peer assignment list is also on Canvas (it's all part of the assignment "The Scarlet Letter: Socratic Seminar Evaluations")

IF YOU MISSED CLASS: We watched the A & E biography of Fitzgerald. There are clips of it on their site, along with a written introduction. The entire biography is also available (in four parts) on Youtube. You may watch/read the information on the A&E site or watch the whole bio on Youtube (I don't know if the upload is legal . . . but it is there, so?).
Whichever option you choose, take notes. Write the alphabet down the left hand side of a piece of paper. For each letter, write down two or three words that show you learned something and listened to/read the entire biography. For "X" you can use any word with the letter in it; for the others, try to find words that begin with the letter. I know some of them are a stretch! :)

For the assignment, just jot down some notes/observations in each category. You will not have a lot to write about yet, but aim for something in each box.

Timeline & Family Tree (use pp. 40-48)
Handout:
Checklist:
HELPFUL HINTS:
* The stars on the family tree=family members involved in the trade for the piano.
* The heavy line on the timeline=CURRENT events (what happened to get Boy Willie to come to Pittsburgh?)
* Do a rough draft of the timeline first or it will probably be a mess. If you do have to squeeze one or two missed things in the timeline that's okay though.

1. Make your own "worksheet" for the chapter
a. On the left side of a piece of paper, write down revealing
moments (quotes, with page numbers, documented in one-source
MLA style).
b. On the right side of the paper, record your thoughts, insights, and
observations that explain HOW and WHY the quote on the left is
revealing (worth a second read).
2. You may work alone or with a partner
3. Cover the whole chapter and show that you thought deeply.
There is no minimum number of quotes. Instead, work until you
feel satisfied that you have met those two requirements.

In-class essay
If you missed class, your essay is available on Canvas until Sunday, November 16 at 11:59 pm. After that time, you cannot make it up.
HW: Self-Assessment (class discussion)
HOMEWORK INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Watch your class's recordings.
The peer assignment list is also on Canvas (it's all part of the assignment "The Scarlet Letter: Socratic Seminar Evaluations")

list of "frailties"
-- highlight what fits you (at least sometimes or in some
situations)
-- look up words you do not know
Make-up work: download or pick up the frailties list and do the two steps above
11/14
11/17
Return to the list
-- choose 15 words from the list that are less familiar to you
-- find out what the words mean and write a sentence using each one which demonstrates that you know the word
-- add words you chose to the "word wall"
NOW . . . write a rough draft of your
confession statement (see the back of the list for my example)
Begin with this sentence:
(letter) is for (a word from the list or another specific 'naughty' quality)
(class discussion)

11/19
1. SRI (except Jacob M, Joseph P, and Ryan H!!)
2. Revise, polish, type and print your confession statement (focus on tone and voice).
3. Design your letter. Next class we will actually create a physical letter based on your confession
statement. Use your computer time to help you visualize your creation.
I will have paper, colored paper, glue, scissors, markers, crayons, and colored pencils. I also have some random crafty stuff I'll provide. If there are specific materials you want, though, plan ahead.
11/20
11/21
Craft your actual letter. Remember to think symbolically--every choice you make should reflect the tone of your confession statement (flamboyant? melodramatic? stern? sorrowful?)

F. Scott Fitzgerald biography
A-Z notes
